Prelude: The Evolution of Thought
Every investigation begins with a hypothesis.
Sometimes that hypothesis leads directly to a solution. Sometimes it produces more questions. And sometimes, through investigation, it expands into something much larger than the question that started it.
The Evolution of Thought began with a question:
When I communicate through infrastructure I do not control, what am I actually giving up?
That question developed into an original hypothesis:
Communication could be designed differently by creating alternative infrastructure capable of reducing the information exposed through systems controlled by third parties.
That hypothesis eventually became a provisional patent.
As part of this project, I will be revealing that provisional patent and the thinking that led to it—including the problem I was attempting to address, the approach I proposed, and the reasoning behind it.
With that said, the patent is not the conclusion of this project.
It is where the investigation begins.
The more I examined communication systems, the more the project evolved. Instead of moving immediately from hypothesis to implementation, I began examining the infrastructure that already exists.
I began asking:
- What actually happens when I communicate?
- What information is created, transmitted, observed, retained, or inferred?
- Who has control over each part of that process?
- What role does a third party play in the communication?
- And what changes when the infrastructure itself becomes part of the analysis?
This shifted the project from simply designing an alternative to understanding the system that an alternative would need to address.
The methodology became:
Observe → Analyze → Question Hypotheses → Understand Control → Consider the Implications
The original concept remains.
Whether the proposed alternative infrastructure ultimately takes the form I initially envisioned—or evolves into something different—is still an open question.
The Evolution of Thought is not a project about arriving at a predetermined answer. It is a documentation of the investigation between the hypothesis and the conclusion.
The provisional patent represents one point along that path:
a formal expression of what I believed was possible at a particular stage of my thinking.
When I publish "The Evolution of Thought",
I will share my provisional patent.
The research that follows allows that hypothesis to be examined against the infrastructure that exists today.
What I observe may reinforce my original concept.
It may reveal limitations.
It may uncover possibilities I had not considered.
Or it may change the design entirely.
The work is still in progress.
What matters is documenting the process honestly enough that the evolution can be seen.
This is therefore an examination not only of communication infrastructure, but of the thought process behind attempting to change it.
Observe. Analyze. Question. Understand. Then determine what comes next.
